I Love this Book (and it makes me sick)

I love this book. I received it yesterday (6/26/13) - so I haven't read the text completely, yet. I gave this product a five star rating having not read it completely for the following reasons:

1 - Full color pics on every page.
2. - comprehensive - I believe every Rick bass (an variations) are represented since their first model.
3. - Includes pics of ads and musicians using Rickenbacker basses are though out the book.
4. - Chapter with color pics of the standard and special finishes available on all models.
5. - Chapter on Customs, Mods, and One-offs.
6 - The final page of the book has a picture of the author standing next to Rick James gravestone (with photo engraving of James with his Rickenbacker 4001).

Etc, Etc.

This book makes me sick...
...because, while in college in 1986 I sold my 70s 4001 Azureglo (blue) to a music store in Charleston, IL, since I wasn't playing at the time and wanted (not NEEDED) the money. (I kept the other bass I owned - a Kramer 4000 aluminum neck bass because I preferred its tone. Still have that one. Looking back I wish I still had both.) Every page of this book makes me sick with regret.

A must for all Rick bass fans

Just got this yesterday via Amazon.com (my wife's account), but after a quick flip through last night and a more leisurely look this morning, I have no problem recommending this book enthusiastically for any Rickenbacker bass player/owner/fan. It's loaded with great photos of just about every variation of every bass Rickenbacker has produced and comprehensive documentation of their features and variations.

Like crack for Ricky junkies

I've loved the sound of Rickenbacker basses since I first heard Chris Squire in about 1970. Didn't get my own 1st one (a '71 4001 MG, w/"toaster", checkerboard binding and skunk stripe - damn, I sure I wish I could get that one back!) until 1981. But to my knowledge, there's never before been a one-stop source for the complete story regarding their history, development, evolution, etc. For anyone who is interested in what is beyond doubt one of the most iconic instruments in the history of rock music, this is the book for you. It's all here, in detail - the various model families; their similarities and differences; the incremental improvements (incl. production dates - invaluable if you're looking for one that has certain characteristics.) Even has a guide to deciphering the various serial #/dating systems Rickenbacker has used over the years - very valuable if you're hunting for a used one on eBay or wherever. Written with a sense of humor, and featuring excellent photography, this is a "must-have" for every happy owner, past, present, or future, of one of these most excellent electric basses.

Worth a serious consideration compared to similar books on the same subject

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this paperback. I've been to many of the locations photographed and discussed in the book. I also own several earlier books on the same subject matter. I can't tell you which you will enjoy more or will serve your needs better but I will try to highlight the differences that are apparent.

First this is a smaller book than BAROQUE AND ROCOCO by Barbara Borngasser and BAROQUE: ARCHITECTURE, SCULPTURE, PAINTING by Rolf Toman. Toman's book is much more extensive, far more photos (including numerous closeups) and is really like having an encyclopedia. You may desire less commentary but want lots of great inside and outside photography like Borngasser's book. For architectural students studying the era, these books really give you the detailed closeups. I would think that these books are better appreciated by someone already familiar with the historical background and progression of architectural styles and building techniques.

Now let's look at the strengths of THE STORY OF BAROQUE ARCHITECTURE. A great improvement would be a larger 14"x11" edition so you could more readily see the details in the wonderful photos. Currently, you would benefit by using a large magnifying glass. There are 1-2 color photos per page, more exterior than interior. It is a thorough coverage of the whole continent. Like all books, some locations are in every book and some more hidden gems are added that you won't see other places. For someone new to Baroque and its transition into Rococo, for an architecture student studying the era for the first time, and for the tourist who would love to have lots of pictures of grand European palaces and churches, this book is great. Additionally, the small font used for the commentary allows a wealth of easily understood information to enhance what you are seeing in the photos. It places you in the context of the time and the thinking of the people involved. The equivalent postcards or photo developing of your own pictures would cost much more than the price of the book. So it is an excellent value.

Dragon Tales

Bran is used to doing what he wants in life but he is getting pressure to find a mate. The dragon shifter population is small and they need more children. He enjoys his work and the models he hires to be his escort to events. He doesn't expect to meet Seraphina at an exhibit and feel so compelled to be with her. Seraphina is fascinated by dragon stories and curates the exhibit. He has to convince her to risk her job to have a personal relationship with him and their is also a danger to them both. It turns out they have a connection neither of them knew about. It is a pretty quick read and appealing to those who like dragon shifters. I would have liked a little more development to the story with background on Seraphina. The romance moves fast. I received a copy in return for a honest review.

This was an adequate book until the end. The book ended with a lot of unanswered questions from the plot. It wasn't even a very good ending. Situations/items were raised but never answered before the book ended. Disappointing...

Anyone interested in Dragon shifter stories, will enjoy. Anyone interested in a HEA with a twist will enjoy

Bran is being pressured, by his mother, to find a mate. If he doesn't do so soon he will have more powerful pressure. Still, he is in no hurry—enter Seraphina, Museum representative and scholar—her specialty, dragons. She feels while there is no concrete evidence of their existence, with so many artifacts they very likely did exist. Did being the operative word.

Bran is instantly drawn to her, at first just as a lover then he feels more and knows he will have her for more. He just has to convince her, let her in on his big secret, make her promise to keep that secret—oh yeah, and escape the sudden danger in their life.

Seaphina wants to resist Bran, however the opportunity of access to his treasure trove of dragon artifacts and art makes that impossible. Can she resist the man? If she learns about his other side, how will she react?

A thoroughly enjoyable one-sitting read. I am always impressed with Ms. Amor's books and this is no exception. Anyone interested in Dragon shifter stories, will enjoy. Anyone interested in a HEA with a twist will enjoy. This complete story with no cliff hangers proves that shorts can be good reads with a talented author.

Having the privilege of getting my grubby paws on this book early I guess I should give some sort or half-baked review 😜. There have been a couple books like this put out in the past few years and none can compare. This book is hands down the Ultimate Guide to all those crazy morphs we have come to love and covet. It's easy to follow and gives you every ingredient you need to make those crazy combos that make us scratch our heads and say what! Yes it's well written and packed with history lessons, genetics breakdowns, and some personal background info on some of the crazier base morphs we all want and to know about. There is some history behind some of Kevin's madness in there as well. This is the book you can pull out at your house and show those people that look at you like your bat s*** crazy when you tell them you keep snakes. This book is loaded with 700 plus pages packed with info and a collaboration of pictures from breeders and collectors from all over the world. I can promise you that this book will cover all the basics of morph making and then some. Beginners and professional breeders alike will get their picture fix without a doubt. I can honestly say that this is the bible of ball python mutations. Pick one up you will not be disappointed!

Great pictures, the only thing I thought the book ...

For the serious Ball python hobbyist that is considering breeding, this book is very handy to have in your hands. It runs down the base mutations, (morphs) and shows some of the ways the morphs can be combined. Great pictures, the only thing I thought the book would have that it doesn't, is a little more in depth guide to telling what markers some of the more subtle morphs have that set them apart from similar morphs, or normal ball pythons. Great book overall.

The only thing keeping me from giving this five stars is the lack of an adequate index. That's really imperative in a book of this size. Otherwise, this book is astounding, amazing, beautiful, brilliant.

About the Author
Richard Turton is professor of chemical engineering and professor in the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University. He has taught WVU’s senior design course for more than twenty-five years.

 

Richard C. Bailie, professor emeritus at WVU, taught chemical engineering design for more than twenty years. He has extensive experience in process evaluation, pilot plant operation, and plant startup.

 

Wallace B. Whiting, professor emeritus at the University of Nevada, Reno, has practiced and taught chemical process design for more than twenty-four years.

 

Joseph A. Shaeiwitz has been involved in WVU’s senior design sequence and sophomore- and junior-level integrated design projects for twenty years.

 

Debangsu Bhattacharyya, associate professor in the department of chemical engineering at WVU, has worked in computer-aided simulation, design, construction, and in the operation of a large petroleum refinery for more than ten years.

Right content, wrong questions!!!

This international version seems to include the new chapters that were added since the 3rd edition but the end of chapter questions were not updated. I noticed this when my Prof assigned chapter 1 question 20 to us and in this book, chapter 1 only has 15 questions.

The book has several tables that are really useful and the reading is pretty straightforward. It can be dry but thats the price you pay for being awesome.

About the Author
Professor "James W. Nilsson" taught at Iowa State University for 39 years. Since retiring from Iowa State, he has been a visiting professor at Notre Dame, California Polytechnic at San Luis Obispo, and the United States Air Force Academy. In 1962, he co-authored (with R.G. Brown) "Introduction to Linear Systems Analysis" (John Wiley & Sons). In 1968, he authored "Introduction to Circuits, Instruments, and Electronics" (Harcourt Brace and World). Professor Nilsson received a Standard Oil Outstanding Teacher Award in 1968, the IEEE Undergraduate Teaching Award in 1992, and the McGraw-Hill Jacob Millman Award in 1995. In 1990, he was elected to the rank of Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Professor "Susan A. Riedel" has been a member of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Marquette University since 1981. She also holds a clinical research appointment in the Department of Orthopaedics at the Medical College of Wisconsin and was a visiting professor in the Bioengineering Unit at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, as a Fulbright Scholar during the 1989-1999 academic year. She has received two awards for teaching excellence at Marquette, and was recognized for her research contributions with an award from the Chicago Unit of the Shriner's Hospitals.

Geir Lundestad is the director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute and a professor of international history at the University of Oslo. He has published numerous books and articles, particularly on the origins of the Cold War and on American-European relations after 1945.
