Self-Damaged Excellence

The aim of this cultural and historical survey of China is to provide a model for cultural world-building by showing what a real, and generally "non-Western", culture is like. It is clear, readable, and easy to assimilate. It would actually serve quite well as the textbook for a high school survey course n Chinese history. It is also a handy reference guide.

Unfortunately, the usability of the the Kindle version is seriously undermined by the fact that there are no internal links. It is not possible to go from the chapter list to individual chapters, nor from index listings to the passage indexed. Only page numbers are provided in the chapter list and index, but page numbers are not an option in the "Go to" feature in the Kindle reader, which only allows jumping by location. In other words, one has to read the book straight through -- not so burdensome, given its pleasant narrative style, but not so useful for a reference book, where one wants to be able to look something up and go straight to it. If one wants to use this as a reference book, only the paper version will do.

It would be a very meritorious act to distribute an updated version that could be used as a reference book. Ideally, this would involve active links from the chapter list and index entries into the body of the text, and page numbers as well. Failing this, even adding page numbers would make the book far more useful. Failing even that, links from the chapter list to the actual chapters would be better than the current Kindle version (as of 3 January 216). .

Excellent book!

Great book, very well written, full of interesting insights that would never have occurred to me otherwise. I highly recommend it for authors, conlangers, and worldbuilders of any background to give you a new perspective outside of the traditional sphere of Medieval Europe, as well as for anyone interested in Chinese culture, history, or linguistics.

About the Author
John Bunyan was born in Elstow, England, in November 1628. Two times his life was spared, once when he was in the army and a soldier who took his place in battle was killed, and once when he fell out of a boat and nearly drowned. He believed, and the world can testify to the truth, that God spared his life for a special purpose.

A few years after he married his first wife, she died, leaving him with four young children. Four years later, he married his second wife, Elizabeth. By this time, he had published two works and was formally recognized as a preacher.

On November 12, 1660, he was scheduled to preach in the little town of Lower Samsell. When he arrived, he was informed that a warrant had been issued for his arrest. Unwilling to denounce his Christian faith and his calling to the ministry, he was imprisoned for twelve years. Among the many writings he published during his imprisonment are The Holy City, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, and the most famous, The Pilgrim's Progress.

After his release, he continued to write and publish stirring works that have endured through time. Among these classics are The Holy War, Visions of Heaven and Hell, and Journey to Hell: The Life and Death of Mr. Badman. After traveling through a rainstorm in an effort to reconcile a young man and his father, Bunyan died on August 31, 1688, and was buried in Bunhill Fields.

Gran historia. Simplemente impresionante. Una alegoria de la vida cristiana. Un clasico de la literatura cristiana. El tiempo es principal testigo de lo grandiosa que es esta historia, han pasado mas de 300 años y este relato sigue cautivando. Totalmente recomendable.

Original Little Mermaid!

My kids all love the disney version of this story; I bought this book because I remembered reading it as a girl and always loved the orginal version; and I wanted my kids to know the real story and the orginal author behind the story. I love this story, my kids loved it to, even though the ending is sad. I think everyone should have this book in their own personal collection. All Hans C. Andersen's books are great reads!

Takes me back to my childhood

As an artist currently working on a serie of Sea creatures, Mermaids are a big part of my everyday life...and I have been going through whatever texts or documents that are related to the subject and could provide me with ideas and inspirations, so off course, I went back to this classical story of my childhood... it had been a big influence in those days, but I had since forgoten the details, and reading it again took me back to my childhood dreams... that was great, and I wish todays children would read more fairy tales...

A delightful tale with nice illustrations

This is one of the many delightful and educational classic tales by Hans Christian Andersen with nice illustrations by Edmund Dulac. The Andersen tales have engrossing and suspenseful plot that enchant children and are filled with entertaining and instructive details, some of which are subtly funny.

The Little Mermaid is one of six children of the Sea King, whose wife has died. None has feet, only a tail. The children are raised by him and his mother. Each of the king’s daughters must remain under water until they attain age 15 when they can swim to the surface, sit on a rock or swim where they like and see the outside world. Since their grandmother does not describe the upper world very well, each of the younger children waits to hear from their older sibling what she has seen. None of the sisters longed to know about the upper world more than the beautiful Little Mermaid because she was the youngest and had to wait the longest. She was fascinated by the hundreds of things that her sisters told her they saw. She heard many tales because each sister marveled at different sights.

Then the Little Mermaid attained age 15 and swam to the surface. She saw a handsome 16-year-old prince on a ship. The ship sank, and she saved to prince, but he was unconscious and did not know who saved him. Andersen tells what happens next.

About the Author

Steven Feuerstein is considered to be one of the world's leading experts on the Oracle PL/SQL language, having written ten books on PL/SQL, including Oracle PL/SQL Programming and Oracle PL/SQL Best Practices (all published by O'Reilly Media). He has also published his first book for kids: http://stevenfeuerstein.com/vivianvultur​e. Steven currently serves as PL/SQL Evangelist for Oracle Corporation. He has been developing software since 1980, spent five years with Oracle (1987-1992), and was PL/SQL Evangelist for Quest Software (and then Dell) from January 2001 to February 2014. He was an Oracle ACE Director (had to give up the prestigious title when he rejoined Oracle) and writes regularly for Oracle Magazine, which named him the PL/SQL Developer of the Year in both 2002 and 2006. He is also the first recipient of ODTUG's Lifetime Achievement Award (2009). A spiritual classic

Nicholas of Cusa is unknown to many Christians, which is unfortunate. He was very insightful about spiritual things, but he also possessed a formidable intellect that was very much at home among the loftiest themes of philosophy and theology. My first exposure to him came 30 years ago in philosophy grad school in a class on his "On Learned Ignorance"--another classic. Because my first exposure to him had been at the philosophical level, I was pleasantly surprised to encounter him in this book as a simple soul in love with God. I highly recommend it.

A difficult read

I am enjoying this book even though there are words I have to go to the dictionary to understand. That's a good thing. I am able to grasp the overall point of the book and find that most pleasing.

Concise but thorough

I've been using this guide exclusively as a desk reference for tolerancing machine parts. Mr. Day's approach is one I like; I don't spend much time around actual machine shops (my company farms out all machining and fabrication) or machinists and as such I generally have no idea how tolerances are measured during inspection (I also am but 2 years out of college). This guide has many illustrations that demonstrate how actual inspection rigs are setup for various tolerances. Using this little guide alone, for example, I could understand the difficulty required of inspecting symmetry or concentricity tolerances because these tolerances rely on generating a median line from produced parts and not a plane or axis, which are much simpler to simulate. Other designers I work with specify these tolerances without a second thought where a simpler scheme would suffice; what they don't know that they don't know is going to cost time and money in fabrication.

I also own Krulikowski's full textbook on the 1994 standard. This little guide is much more useful, again because I think the best approach to understanding and interpreting GD&T is from the inspection table. I'm off to buy the full text this guide is based on. Thanks Mr. Day!

The first thing I dislike is the binding being on the top and not the side. It makes for flipping through pages a pain.
If you reference this book often enough, I am sure you will have pages begin falling out. The binding it to small to allow flipping through without pages binding up inside the binding.
The content has nice pretty colored pictures trying to describe what each call out means, but it does a poor job explaining it.
This book is so vague in its explanations that if you are weak enough in your GD&T knowledge that you need to reference something for a reminder, this book leaves you scratching your head....like it did me.

The Ultimate-GD-Pocket-Guide-Y14-5-2009 did a much better job getting its content to be understood by me.

I pretty much learned GDT from this book

I pretty much learned GDT from this book. I don't consider myself an expert, but it's basically an introductory class for $15. You can't beat it. I have been able to confidently detail drawings with this guide. Any slight clarifications or minor questions can usually be answered by a quick google search. The 3D images in here are invaluable. Better than a textbook in my opinion. Best all in one quick resource guide without question.
