Review: 'The State We're In' by Adele Parks

The description of ‘The State We’re In’ is quite vague, resulting in readers starting the book without hardly any idea of what will happen to the characters. In times where we often already know the entire plotline of a book before actually reading it ourselves, I thought this was quite a refreshing experience and will therefore try to not give away too many details in my review. The book tells the story of two characters, Jo and Dean, who meet on a flight from London to Chicago. Jo and Dean appear to be each other’s opposite; Jo is a slightly ditzy hopeless romantic, while Dean is an attractive cynical business man who does not believe in love. Jo wants someone to talk to during the long flight to Chicago, while Dean just wants to travel alone and in silence. I’m not going to say much more about the plotline besides that after this flight, both Jo’s and Dean’s life will never be the same again.

A lot of people have said that this is Adele Parks’ best novel, but seeing as I haven’t read any of her other books I can’t really compare it to anything else. It took me a couple of chapters to get into the story, but as soon as I was I wanted to keep on reading and discover what would happen. The story is told from the perspective of four different characters: Jo, Dean, Clara and Eddie, and they’re all well-developed with fascinating and complicated background stories. The book deals with some universal themes: relationships, marriage, family ties, and Adele Parks explores these topics in an intriguing way. Her writing style is intense and detailed and even though this is my first Adele Parks novel, I am convinced she’s an amazing storyteller.

This book is surrounded by a lot of mystery and I think it is pretty amazing that if you look up reviews, everyone seems to respect the decision to keep the ending a secret. The publisher created the Twitter hastag #KeepTheSecret and it seems to have worked. However, all the buzz and excitement regarding this ‘secret’ prepared me for something big, something spectacular. And while the ending did not necessarily disappoint me, I couldn’t help but get a feeling like: Is this really it? Therefore, I recommend people who are thinking of picking up this novel to definitely pick it up, but do not just read it for the secret, read it for the wonderful story that’s inside. ‘The State We’re In’ is an intriguing and emotional love story; my first Adele Parks reading experience and it has definitely made me want to pick up more of her work in the future!

Opposites attract

The story covers a few days, with a few chapters back in 1976 enlightening the present day situation, and the conclusion a few years down the road.
Eddie was a crap father who abandoned his wife and kids, Dean and Zoe. He's now dying in the hospital and it's the first time Dean sees him again in decades.
Clara is leaving her husband of forever and hopes her grown-up children won't hold it against her - especially Jo, forever romantic and unpractical. Jo's last whim is to fly over the Atlantic and break up her former fiancé's wedding.
When Jo and Dean meet, it's the unlikeliest match ever. However, how they meet, and how their story and family stories make sense, is a very enjoyable adventure.
When I started the last chapter I had a sudden inkling of the final twist. It's a bit too much and sad at the same time, but it does give the story a depth it would not otherwise have possessed.
My only complaint is with Jo's character. There is absolutely no way I could believe she was 35 - she is so immature and impulsive you'd think she was at least ten years younger. But it's a detail.

Truly a heartwarming and heart wrenching read. Beautiful, flawed characters, the right amount of realism, romance, llight and shade and an incredibly compelling story, read in one sitting. A wonderful book.

Excellent, captivating book... but the Kindle edition is very disappointing!

An excellent book sequence, which I read with great pleasure in its lovely first edition when it came out. I enthusiastically give five stars to the book... but I wanted to reread it and got the Kindle edition for convenience. It is *very* disappointing: maps and illustrations are unreadable, italics in the original are missing, long names are sometimes 'hyphenated' in the middle of a line, and, most annoying, footnotes are completely missing, at least on my Kindle Paperwhite (they are available on the tablet edition.)

I wish publishers would be more careful: typesetting is important, computers can do it extremely well, and there is really no excuse for such a botched job.

It's worth holding out until the end!

I'm not going to lie, this is a long book! Book 1 (if you buy the whole Baroque Cycle in one volume like me, it's still divided into 3 books) drags at the beginning but if you've read the Cryptonomicon first, some of the last names will be familiar, just slog through the first couple of chapters, it's worth it! Book 2 at one point was broken in to 2 separate books as well so the dynamic is different but I like that they were combined so that the timeline of events is whole. I love Mr. Stephenson's writing style! The characters are hilarious and you can't help but loving Jack. My one complaint is that the eBook has some issues with format. The quotes/letters at the beginning of chapters in Book 2 (see picture) are garbled and the Table of Contents is a mess.

A work of incredible scope and grandeur

Neal Stephenson is the greatest living writer. Here veering (mostly) from his futuristic scifi , he presents a broad view of 17th and 18th century Europe, featuring Louis 14, the last of the Tudors and first of the Hanovers, Isaac Newton, Wilhelm Leibniz, and the geniuses of the English enlightenment, along with tales on the origins of trade, money, religion, puritans, the birth of the stream engine and computer, and of course cryptography. It is stunning in its scope and characters and provides a fabulous history of life in Versailles and Glorious Revolution England.

Stunning, thoroughly enjoyable, and highly recommended.

An important message

Tim Ingold's 'Making' is a worthy successor to his earlier `Lines: A Brief History' and `Being Alive: Essays on Movement, Knowledge and Description'. This book is a very rich and satisfying critique of the objectivist epistemology and technocratic ethos that underpins much of knowledge production today.

The critique operates at different levels. Its opening gambit is a prima facie plea to save the discipline of anthropology from a collapse into the documentary thrust of ethnography. Ingold sees the former as a transformational "space for generous, open-ended comparative yet critical enquiry into the conditions and potentials of human life". Ethnography merely turns `participant observation' into `qualitative data' that are to be analysed in terms of an exogenous body of theory. These are fundamentally different, antithetical ways of knowing. Ingold's argument is a call to deepen our knowledge of the world from the inside, as fellow travellers, as co-producers with other beings and things that command our attention. Knowing, therefore, is `understanding in practice'. It is inextricably meshed with `making' as an active engagement with the material world.

Here the central theme of the book emerges. We are used to think of making as a `project', with a rather precise idea in mind of what we like to produce (a plan, a design) and a supply of materials to achieve it. Ingold contrasts this `hylomorphic' model with a `morphogenetic' approach that enacts making as a contingent process of growth. Making becomes a process of entering "the grain of the world's becoming and bend it to an evolving purpose". The author goes on to demonstrate the power and relevance of the morphogenetic approach in a revealing series of case studies centering on very different `things and beings' drawn from the realms of anthropology, archeology, art and architecture (`the four A's'). These include ancient utensils such as paleolithic handaxes, quasi-natural landscape features such a prehistoric mounds and technical, complex artefacts such as watches and cathedrals. Ingold wields the morphogenetic perspective as a conceptual lever to unearth layers upon layers of very rich and surprising insights. On this journey he sides with intellectual allies such as Deleuze and Guattari, Richard Sennett, Vilem Flusser, Gregory Bateson and the paleontologist André Leroi-Gourhan (to name just a few).

The relevance of Ingold's argument goes beyond the already expansive territory encapsulated by the four A's. From my perspective it connects seamlessly with recent (and not so recent) insights in decision-making theory, in management, foresight and transition studies and in soft systems approaches. On the other hand it seems that the epistemology defended by Ingold is a radical critique of the kind of `hard' systems thinking that is sought after by decision-makers who are increasingly taxed by the savage unruliness of the world unfolding beyond their boardroom doors. This kind of `joined-up thinking' Ingold considers to be "a friend of reason but an enemy of sentience".

Apart from the cogency of an argument that is very difficult to do justice in a brief review, it seems to me this book has a number of qualities that enhance the reading experience. Despite its richness it is a slim volume (a mere 140 pages) and therefore doesn't impose undue claims on time-pressed readers. Ingold's prose is, as always, carefully groomed and accessible without being condescending. Also, I relished the appositeness of the carefully chosen references, which provide opportunities for engaging follow-up study (Lars Spuybroek's `The Architecture of Continuity: Essays and Conversations' and David Turnbull's `Masons, Tricksters and Cartographers' to name but two of my personal favourites). Altogether this is an important book that I'd like to emphatically recommend to the intellectually curious, whatever their disciplinary background.

Got this for a 7 year old almost 2nd grader who has a bit of a lying problem. We have her read it to us every time she doesn't tell us the truth. She'll be so sick of it, and it has improved both her reading, word recognition, and fibbing. ;)

Grade 5-8-Eleven-year-old Forrest is the son of the Ravenmaster in the Tower of London. Historically, this position, which fell to one of the Tower guards, was to care for the ravens that live within the walls of the fortress as a token of luck to keep it from falling to its enemies. Forrest has grown up in the Tower and has his own pet raven, Tuck. He feels confined and sheltered from the outside world. Bullies make fun of him. When dangerous Scottish rebels are captured and imprisoned, he hopes to show his bravery. His responsibility, however, turns out to be to take food to the young daughter of one of the rebels. As he learns more about Maddy, he comes to admire and respect her, and realizes that if he does not help her escape, she will be executed. To do so, though, he will have to go against all he has been taught. The story has its share of suspense, excitement, and interesting characters. Set in 1735, it does not flinch from describing the brutality of the time, including public hangings, which Forrest's mother loves to attend. While some of the plot elements may seem unrealistic and the ending too pat, the story is certainly satisfying. Its message of judging people on their own merits and not on the basis of stereotypes comes across strongly. An author's note, a history of the Tower of London, and a glossary of unfamiliar English and Scottish words are appended.

The Ravenmasters Secret

The Ravenmasters Secret is a great story for everyone of all ages. The Ravenmasters Secret gets you wondering what you would do if you were in the same shoes as the main character. The main Character is Forrest who he and his family live in the tower of London, he is the Ravenmasters son. He takes care of ravens and also feeds the prisoner which he is in charge of, forrest has many differnet chores around the fortress. In the story he gets caught into a deep secret which he and is friend, the rat catcher, Ned risk their lives to save a scottish rebels daughter who is a prisoner,named Madeline, she is the same age as Forrest and Ned.

Forrest gets into many tough situations which I would not have the courage to risk my life for. In the book you learn about the different lifestyles and theculture of England around 1735.

The Ravenmasters secret is based on a true story, but not real characters, it is based on several attempts of the escape of the Tower of London. The Ravenmasters Secret is a wonderful book which once you start you can't stop until you find out the conclusion to see how the plan to escape turns out.

Another Woodruff Winner

I'm a huge fan of Elvira Woodruff's. I first started reading her books when my kids did, now that they're grown I keep reading them. In fact, I buy them and save them for my (fingers crossed) grandchildren. This one is my favorite along with the Christmas Doll. She is such an amazing writer, right up there with E.B. White and CHARLES DICKENS!
But now for the Ravenmaster. I don't know how she does it, but from page 1 I am right there in the tower of London with Forrest and Rat and the secret prisoner. I care from the very beginning what happens to each of them, and I also care for all the other characters in the book, 'cept one, but I'll let you read it so you can discover the Fagan.... Anyway, I highly recommend this book for any age child, even one in her fifties like me! I will be very suprised if this book does not become a classic. It should--and it should end up with a few awards, too. In my humbe (o.k.--I'm a librarian, too) opinion.

Forrest, Maddie and Rat

In 1735 a boy named Forrest Harper lives in the Tower of London. His dad is the Ravenmaster and someday Forrest hopes to be the Ravenmaster. One day the town is going to have a hanging, so his family goes. At the hanging, some mean boys start teasing him and make him watch the hanging. He wants to prove that he's not a little boy because he's small, so he tells them that he is going to have a tough Scottish prisoner in his part of the Tower. But it turns out that his prisoner is young rebel named Maddie. He befriends Maddie but she is going to have to have her head chopped off! Meanwhile, his friend Rat is an indentured apprentice to a rat catcher. The rat catcher loses a bet with a nasty chimney sweep who makes kids work until they die. Because of the bet, Rat now has to work for the chimney sweep. How can Forrest help his friends escape their terrible fates?

"Dree yer ain weird" means "face your destiny" in Scottish. I think that Elvira Woodruff means that as a moral because Forrest Harper has to find out his destiny. The Ravenmaster's Secret is suspenseful because you want to know what happens to Forrest and his friends. If their plan doesn't work out perfectly then Rat, Maddie and Forrest will die. Forrest will die because he is a traitor to England. It is interesting reading a book set so long ago and in a different country with a different community. Some people do not like death, so if you're one of those people this may not be the best choice. I think it's a good book even though it has killing. That's the way things were back then.

As someone who is highly interested in all things regarding PUA and who has read quite a few books on the subject I would encourage not waist your time on this piece of crap book! Although you are promised to learn about hypnotism in this book you do not. After reading through all of the BS the author spouts off about you are given a plug for a book that you can write the author for on how to hypnotize women. The first chapters until then are information encouraging you to use dating service and adds for sex. You are told all of the places that you can find hookers in England and how you can wait in public restrooms and watch guys pee until you see one glance at you who is willing to get you off in the stall. This guy gives a bad name pick up artists and is why most people are unwilling to listen to anything related to the topic. This guy is not a pick up artist as much as he is a pervert who should be locked up for half of the crap he pulls. If you want to be a giant doosher then read this book and you will be on your way to being locked up as a sexual offender!
