In the Yoga Studio

For me the essence of yoga is aliveness. I am a yoga instructor and the director of a 500 hour yoga teacher training school. Hatha yoga is movement education and every yoga teacher is a movement educator. This book is about conscious movement. Although it is written primarily for performers, theorists, and composers, yoga teachers and practioners will find it applies. Especially relevant are the chapters on Mobilizing Balance, Shaping Phrase with Span and Climax, Letting Gesture Through (Reverberation), The Movements of Juncture, and The Spirit of Play. Insightful also is Pierce's personal and professional journey toward musical embodiment, shared in the first chapter, Vitalizing the Musical Elements, One by One.

Alexandra Pierce's simple yet intelligent movement explorations sharpen awareness. We have used her processes to clarify in the teacher trainings and add nuance and joy to in the general classes, especially the salutations. Additionally, Pierce's Joint Dance has become a popular standard warm-up in the WiseWays classes.

As with all of Pierce's writings, reading Deepening Musical Performance through Movement is a visceral joy. The wordsmithing is kinetic. Pierce knows body, movement, and music. The writing embodies the message.

This is Pierce's third book on movement. Earlier books, co-authored with Roger Pierce, are Expressive Movement: Posture and Action in Daily Life, Sports, and the Performing Arts and Generous Movement: A Practical Guide to Posture in Action, which comes with a music CD to accompany the movements. These two books are staples at the WiseWays studio. Both are directed toward the general reader, not specifically toward musicians. They are recommended reading for our 200 and 500 Yoga Alliance registered trainings and our Professional Movement Teachers School. Now we have, in Deepening Musical Performance through Movement, another fine addition to our library.

An Amazing Approach to Music for all Musicians

This is a wonderful book--a brilliant book--and I hope that it spreads like wildfire among musicians, particularly performers and teachers (well, composers and theorists, too!).

The writing is so beautiful and so clear, which I really appreciate. I've often expressed to other musicians my dislike of convoluted academic writing that I have to read over and over just to figure out what it's supposed to mean. This book is the opposite of that, yet every sentence is imbued with deep meaning.

I particularly loved Chapter Five on "structural hearing." It helped counter my aversion to Schenkerian graphs: though I have understood the profundity of Schenker's recognition of the underlying structures in music, and the beauty of their "sameness," I have often thought, "Good. Now, let's get back to what makes this beautiful piece different from that beautiful piece." It was helpful to read the narratives of players experiencing deeper levels in movement, arriving at a new understanding of them, and then using those experiences to bring alive the depths of the music in their own performance--not at the expense of the surface beauty of melody, harmony, and texture, but in a way that makes those more expressive as well.

I strongly recommend this book to all musicians and music lovers.

Refreshing reading for professional musicians--and others!

I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Pierce's book. After having read her previous works a few years back, I found this book to be a great summary of not only her work with movement, but the essence of how she works with, hears, performs, and teaches music.

This book is a chance to re-invigorate one's musical pursuits with new concepts and refined ways of hearing one's own performances. Her ingenious format makes the book easy to read, and adds a personal touch. The suggestions for exercises and activities are invaluable for--exactly as the title suggests--deepening one's performance (and hearing) of music.

The only thing I wished for in the book which was not there was a summary or list of all the suggested exercises, for handy reference.

I highly recommend this book to all musicians and teachers, as well any other "performers". It would also be a great "nudge" for a student who is not too excited about music theory, to give him/her a sense of how theory can enhance their performance abilities.

It has been said that his section on the Rook alone make his book indispensable to the serious chess player, since the Rook is so important in both middle and endgames.
Pachman presents his method in the form of a thorough, systematic, analytical text, which draws upon scores of great games for exemplification. Both classical and very recent masters are included, although stress is on the moderns: Capablanca, Alekhine, Dr. Lasker, Rubinstein, Nimzovich, Botvinnik, Reshevsky, Bronstein, Smyslov, and Spasski.

Best One-volume strategy book

This is the best one-volume strategy book on the market for all players below the USCF 2000 (Expert) level rating.
It contains virtually all of the information contained in other classic, highly-recommended texts such as ; My System (Nimzovich), Chess Praxis (Nimzovich), The Game of Chess (Tarrasch), and The Middlegame (Books 1 & 2 by Euwe).
The major difference between Pachman's book and the others is that it is the most modern, concise, and highly readable. Some of the other titles are quite verbose and occaisionally stray from the main lesson being presented.
In short, this book contains nearly everything an aspiring chessplayer needs to know about strategy to become a strong player.
Another bonus, as with all books from Dover, is the price tag. Dollar for Dollar, you would be hard-pressed to find a better value anywhere!

Decent Introduction

This book is an abridgement of Pachman's three-volume "Complete Chess Strategy", which ranks as one of the classic works on strategic and positional chess (Another such work would be Euwe and Kramer's "The Middlegame", in two volumes.). Unfortunately the abridgement doesn't capture the rich and full flavor of the original. Many of the classic examples have had to be omitted for reasons of space. A player of class C strength might learn something from this abridgement, but for stronger players I would recommend the original three volumes. It's a fact of life that the general level of chess strength and erudition has risen markedly during the last several years; the level of knowledge that once would have sufficed to maintain B strength is, alas, inadequate.
Many of the topics discussed in Pachman now have specialist texts addressing them. For example, for isolated pawns, see Baburin's "Winning Pawn Structures"; for the major pieces see Damsky's "The Heavy Pieces in Action". There are numerous other examples. Pachman can be usefully employed as an introduction to these more specialised books.
Whether a player works with the abridgement or the original, I recommend he also have available Watson's "Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy", which lends perspective on the contemporary state of understanding of strategic and positional chess.

In my view, better than My System

Do you want to improve your chess. Are you rated under 2000? Then this is a good place to start. This is much easier reading than the often verbose and self-serving My System. Pachman's writing is clear and insightful. Buy this book and play through every few years. You will almost certainly gain new insights into chess with every reading. This book should be on every aspiring chess player's shelf alongside Larry Evan's New Ideas in Chess, Hans Kmoch's Pawn Power in Chess, David Bronstein's Zurich 1953, Bobby Fischer's My Sixty Memorable Games, Mikhail Botvinnik's 100 Selected Games, Mikhail Tal's Life and Games of Mikhail Tal, Alexander Alekhine's Best Games and Richard Reti's Masters of the Chessboard. That is some pretty lofty company, but Modern Chess Strategy is worthy of it. Oh, and you can't beat the price.

About the Author
David Lippman received his master’s degree in mathematics from Western Washington University and has been teaching at Pierce College in Lakewood, Washington since Fall 2000. David has been a long time advocate of open learning, open materials, and basically any idea that will reduce the cost of education for students. David is also the coauthor of Precalculus: An Investigation of Functions, an open and free precalculus (college algebra and trig) textbook.

A great math textbook!

I've done pretty high-up math for my age- I've gone up to calculus so far, with A's and B's. So I was a little worried that taking a course like Math in Society would be too easy for me. While a lot of it I understood really well, I never realized how much of the basics I was missing/needed practice on! This mathbook made it simple to rebuild the base of my mathematical education. The problems were fun, and the examples included references to movies like Scream and Saw, and locations nearby and that kept my interest levels up. I will for sure keep this book around to challenge my mind over the summer, so I'm prepared to transfer to Western Washington University this fall. This is a great textbook from the Pacfic Northwest!

Not my kind of math book

This book is being used in my survey of math course, which is required for students not planning to move onto higher levels of math for their degree. With this being said It teaches through examples instead of through concepts. I don't like this teaching style. I pretty much have to go to a tutor to figure out the problems. Not the best for someone who doesnt fully grasp mathematical concepts. It also has a lot to do with the teacher using the book. ALSO have google on hand because a lot of the terminology needs to be looked up, there is no glossary.

Worst math "textbook" I have ever used

Worst math "textbook" I have ever used! Our instructor struggles for teachable course content, and has to resort (daily!) to pulling from other resources in order to complete her lessons; math in society texts from previous years, business math, etc. This book reads like an English book, which is great for the statistics portion, but otherwise makes it difficult to follow. There is simply not enough homework exercises here to firmly grasp and practice the material. I can't believe I am saying this but, I wouldn't mind paying a bit more for a book that better suited my needs for this course; that is a unanimous theme within my class!

Good book, caused us to discuss, think and pray. Maybe some differing conclusions.

She presents her point of view well. As a parent of an adult LGBTQ we need to find a loving way to have a loving relationship with our child, and as a Christ follower, without condemning or condoning some behavior we do not agree with. The author gives a good perspective on this, but, I'm not sure I come to all the same conclusions as she does. The author seems to have a perspective that all behaviors are OK as that is the way God made our children. God has made our children the way they are and we do need to accept that (and them), but some behaviors are still choices, and not ones we need to celebrate or condone. Yet, we still need to love them as Christ wants us to. A good book on the subject, and it caused my wife and I to discuss and explore ourselves, our beliefs, and our relationship with our child more.

What Unconditional Love is All About

Susan Cottrell is a mother and an author who knows how to define her topic and her audience and then stick to both of them. Her topic is how to love and support one’s children when they reveal their sexual or gender deviations from the norm, regardless of one’s dogma, ideology, or peer pressure. Her target audience is Christian parents of children who have trusted them enough to be truthful about their inner discoveries about themselves.

Refusing to get caught up in conflicting arguments, Cottrell handles biblical objection in a few deft sentences: “take those verses that trouble you, along with what you’ve internalized from church, and ask God about it… As I walked through this issue, God addressed my doubts specifically and lovingly, showing me that none of the biblical writers had any concept of a loving same-sex relationship” (p. 27).

Several times Susan Cottrell refers to “a protective mother bear” taking sides with her gay children. I wonder whether Cottrelll knows that the Bible depicts God as an angry mother bear (II Kings 2:24). Whether or not, it is a powerful image for the unquestioning zealous support Cottrell believes good parents owe to their children.

Cottrell has done her homework. She points out that today, 50% of Americans support marriage equality, as opposed to 46% in 2007, and only 27% in 1996. But regardless of such social change, the parental job remains constant—to support their children’s authenticity. Cottrell even suggest that perhaps God has given certain parents an LGBTQ child precisely in order “to set you free from the need to please!” (p. 57).

Cottrell points out that training a child “in the way they should go” literally means training them “according to their own particular inclinations—the way that God designed them” (p. 65). Always, the foundation to build on is Grace, never an absolutistic ideology or concept.

Cottrell reminds her readers of how much sexual standards have shifted through the centuries. With biblical approval, men formerly married multiple wives and took concubines; and if the story of Adam and Eve is taken literally their children had to have married one another incestuously. So our current attitudes about sex and gender had better be open and humble—embracing those children who discover they are transgender, or intersexual, or lesbian, gay, bisexual, or simply questioning.

Always, always, Cottrell calls for the Golden Rule. How would you have wanted your parents to respond if you had to tell them you were gay? Or transgender? Or whatever? Then respond exactly that way!

More than seventy years ago, when I knew I was lesbian and cowered in fear of discovery by my fundamentalist family, I could not have imagined a book like this one. I was in my thirties when God used my love for my son to show me I was acceptable just as I had been created. One night I was on my knees pleading with God for healing from my homosexuality, when a still small voice within me startled me with this question, “Virginia, what do you want for your son?” I answered, “I just want him to be happy.” And the Voice replied, “That’s exactly what I want for you!” So I stood up, stopped asking to be changed, and began to find ways to live joyously within the orientation I had been assigned by my loving Parent.

With books like Cottrell’s, hopefully hundreds of young people will be spared the long fearful alienation I had endured before that liberating moment. And hundreds of parents will be reassured that their children’s sex or gender orientation is not about them, is certainly not their fault, and provides opportunity to show what unconditional love is all about.

Heartfelt and humble; compassionate and compelling!

This is the single most helpful book I read when our son came out. We were already affirming of LGBTQ people, but once our son came out the way my husband and I were treated at our church of 25 years was very hurtful. Susan Cottrell's well-written, compassionate and compelling book helped us through the painful things that were attributed to the Bible by "friends" we though were educated. Susan's heartfelt, humble and well-researched book gave us peace about our sweet son, as well as power to shake the dust from our sandals and leave behind the ignorance of our former church. This book will be helpful to parents of an LGBTQ child - regardless if the child is 5 or 55 - and regardless if the parent is Christian or of another faith. I highly recommend "Mom, I'm Gay."
