More Marvel magic

A solid mythological story with great art!
I was curious about this Marvel character and how it muight fit into the upcoming Marvel film The Avengers. I only recently became aquainted with the Marvel characters Iron Man, Captain A, (watched Spidey and the Hulk as a kid) and have enjoyed all the films.
On it's own I think Thor is cool, in the vein of Conan. Some other comics I really like (Lucifer, Sandman series) refer to this universe also and I think so long as it stays dark and edgy (like those) it will be a solid series. However this collection is a bunch of one shots! Cool... but I remain reserved about Thor.

Heavy Metal Thor

This is probably the most epic, metal version of Thor I have seen yet. It's a clever collection of single issue story arcs under the Thor: Ages of Thunder name. There are two artists that are present here, each one doing a half of each issue. At times, this shift in artist can be a little jarring, but it's mostly consistent. The final giant-sized issue is more jarring in the art, as there are four artists with shockingly different art styles to speak of, but that's a part of its story, and it is actually really cool. Overall, Ages of Thunder is a pretty consistent collection of fairly high quality Thor stories.

Each story is a "mature graphic novel" re-imagining of classic Norse fairy tales that you may have even grown up hearing before going to bed as a child. That said, it is worth noting that this isn't your typical Marvel Thor, who is very heroic and noble. No, this is NORSE mythology Thor, who was an arrogant, selfish jerk who caused much collateral damage and suffering without remorse while "saving the day." You may not like that, but I didn't mind at all. Since Marvel has established that countless cycles of Ragnarok have occurred, each own with its own version of Asgard and its major players, this is a refreshing way to step outside the established history for Thor and Asgard. This is a nice collection of stories that feel like plausible, cool narratives without intruding on established canon too much, and I like that. The rebuilding of Asgard's wall by a humble human, the golden apple famine from Enchantress being kidnapped, a harsh winter curse from a ice giant avenging her slain father, they're all here, plus a lot more.

Seeing as each issue is a standalone story, I can't find any fault with the storytelling. I may be 21, but when I first got into comic books, I read a lot of the Marvel Masterwork graphic novels that reprinted the Lee/Kirby/Ditko classics, and I really love that single issue format that the silver age comic creative teams implemented so well. There were no convoluted bajillion part series that moves at a snails pace with no pay-off or closure, since these days they are usually abandoned before completion anyway. Matt Fraction is infamous for this problem lately, meandering too much in his ongoing series, introducing really intriguing stories, then drudging along at snail's pace without any real pay-off. Since each story here is contained in one issue, with an underlying theme of Thor's arrogance growing and becoming too much for Odin to bear, this problem doesn't occur. In fact, it's quite the contrary, as each issue is a giant-slaying, blood-colossus-mowing-down-every-dead-person-become-evil-zombie smorgasbord of balls-out Norse god warfare action. It's pretty awesome at times, and many of the scenes that Fraction and the artists conjur up could each be the theme of an entire epic progressive rock/heavy metal band's album. There is one exception in the last, giant-sized special which was a rather poignant, but still action-packed salute to the classic Walter Simonson story about the Executioner's last stand. Its quality matches the rest.

All-in-all, this collection is consistently quite good, but not as exceptional as the Simonson run, the J.M Stracynzki run, the Lee/Kirby days, or Langridge/Samnee's exceptional "Thor The Mighty Avenger" series. I would still highly recommend Ages of Thunder to any fan of Norse fairy tale action, Thor, or epic comic books in general. Buy it, pop in an Opeth album, and enjoy the heavy metal norse action.

Brilliant and Very Re-Readable

Coming from Straczinksi to this, my enjoyment level never dropped. This is the perfect companion to the new series that offers itself as a great backstory of Thor before he was banished to live among mortals. Reading the mythology behind Thor was fascinating, and every story in this collection is solid. Matt Fraction failed to captivate me in Invincible Iron Man, but he really really impressed me here. I ate up the writing and soaked all of the beautiful artwork will gracious eyes. The action, magic, lust, and shine of this comic makes it a classic in my collection. I definately will visit Thor: Ages of Thunder again in the near future.

If you like Straczinski's series get this and Secret Invasion: Thor. Both trades are 5 star material. If you know only a little about Thor I reccomend Vol 1. as a starting point over this. If you haven't read this yet, you need it if you are going to visit Thor. I am urging you not to miss out on this great Thor epic.

Jam-packed full of great info!!

Susan really laid out all the information anyone needs to know about getting started in technical writing in an easy-to-read, enjoyable book. Originally, I was a little nervous about diving into a different and new career at my age, but Susan took all my worries away. By the time I finished reading it, I was excited about all the opportunities in technical writing that lay before me and couldn't wait to get started. Now I have a software owner's manual to write, and that's just the beginning, all thanks to Susan!!!

This book is a good guide for technical writing. Bilheimer explains the different kinds of technical writings. In the book, she mentioned the most important quality is to be confident in your ability to learn. That's true. And she recommends online tutorials for learning different software programs. The book also offers lists of the equipment that is useful for being a technical writer and offers tips on making discount purchases at online auctions and stores. Needless to say, the book includes success stories of people who started out as average people and successfully became technical writers.

'Counterpoint in Composition' began life not as a book, but as a collection of examples from the literature. Dr. Salzer and Dr. Schachter assembled it to show the connections between the simple procedures of species counterpoint and the complexities of composition, an approach to counterpoint deriving from the work of Heinrich Schenker.

About the Author

The late Felix Salzer was a Professor at Queens College, City University of New York, and the author of Structural Hearing. Carl Schachter is a Professor at Queens College and at the Mannes School of Music and is the author of many essays on music theory.

Kind of lofty in tone, but a pretty good book

I'm sure lots of people have been in this situation: you blitz through species counterpoint in your freshman year as a music major, only to realize its importance much later (i.e. after your extensive tour of the rest of music theory). Books like Salzer/Schachter's are a good way to go back and do it properly. This book is excellent and thorough, covering counterpoint not only as a theoretical grounding for later harmonic theory, but also examining its use in large-scale composition. The only problem with the book is the Salzer/Schachter's prose- it's like they're bringing down the counterpoint rules on tablets from the sacred mountain. Some procedures are flatly forbidden that more relaxed authors -- like Jeppesen -- excuse (in instances where fudging the rules produces a beautiful voice leading). In some cases, they contradict other authors- Jeppesen cannot encourage voice-crossing enough, Salzer/Schachter list it as a mortal sin. Worse, Salzer/Schachter write their exercises for 'The Student', an individual of impossible concentration and diligence who can compose whole exercises in his/her head and would be ashamed to even touch a piano. In other words, their tone is not exactly encouraging- compared to 'The Student', your early efforts are bound to feel pretty clumsy (at least mine were). Still, this is a nice book with lots of good exercises and examples drawn from real music literature. Between Salzer/Schachter, Fux, and Jeppesen, it's more than possible to make a thorough review of counterpoint working by yourself.

Good book if you are patient with the writing

I must differ with the reviewer who said (in 2000) that this book is "fairly new." It first came out in the late 1960s or early 1970s, because I used to use it as a textbook in my theory courses at a midwestern liberal arts college. My experience was that the typical undergraduate music major found it rather rough going, but maybe I wasn't the best teacher back then, either! I myself learned a lot from the book. As far as I know, it's the only book on counterpoint that successfully illustrates how composed music (e.g., by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, etc.) is built on the same principles as species counterpoint. This should be an answer to the student who has trouble seeing the value of those seemingly endless (and amazingly difficult!) species counterpoint exercises. While the traditional answer has been "it teaches you discipline," S & S are able to show (convincingly, in my opinion) that beneath the surface of a brilliant piano sonata of Beethoven can be found the basic principles of voice leading that only species counterpoint can teach.

I agree with the reviewer who pointed out that the authors are not always consistent with earlier books with respect to the rules of species counterpoint. However, it must be said that in most cases they point this out and supply a reason for their departure from tradition. For example, I think that part of the reason they don't allow voice crossing in the species exercises is that part crossing is a "pure" contrapuntal technique that would severely weaken the polarity or independence between the two voices, and make cloudy the connection they seek to establish between the species approach and the techniques of prolonged counterpoint (aka "real" music) they discuss later in the book. I have no problem with that. Neither do I have a problem with Jeppesen allowing voice crossing in species counterpoint, because he's approaching the technique with a different goal in mind, namely that of imitating the style of Palestrina. The two books have different aims, and the prospective user should be aware of that.

The point about the authors' prose style that one reviewer made is very well taken. To me it is overly pompous and inflated, and many of their points could be made in far fewer words. It's a little suggestive of the image that the authors occupy a lofty perch from which they toss down a few crumbs of learning from time to time to students, but even as they do so, they don't think the students are really worthy of receiving this wisdom. Maybe that's a bit harsh, but I really can't see my current students warming up very much to this kind of writing. There is definitely no feeling that "you too can succeed in writing excellent counterpoint" here. Times do change, after all.

If you are reading this review you are perhaps either a teacher looking for a good text, or a musician who wants a stronger theory background. By all means get this book and learn from it. But don't let the authors' prose style make you feel inferior, like a lowly worm who, no matter how hard he or she tries, can never achieve results worthy of the masters. Better just to accept them for the pretentious pedants they are, and forgive them for it.

This text not only provides an in depth tutorial of species counterpoint, it also provides a wealth of examples spanning many styles and periods. Too many counterpoint books neglect the application of contrapuntal technique in real compositional context but that is not the case here.

A Great Introduction to the Life of Abraham

"Abraham" is another installment in Gene Getz' Men of Character series on various male biblical figures. There are 12 chapters with the following titles:

7. A Pure Motive But a Wrong Method

11. Forgiven - But Facing the Consequences
12. The Final Exam

The book is easy to read and is excellent for the layperson or pastor who is looking for material on Abraham to preach on.

Read, enjoy, and be encouraged to learn from Abrham's successes and failures. Highly recommended.

?Dudley Dillard, in his recent volume on Keynes, has pointed out in the preface that The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money' is not very intelligible to the undergraduate and general reader. It can safely be said that the author has remedied this lack of communication by producing a competent and thorough text for elementary students. It is particularly suitable for students because it avoids the major pitfalls and false problems that have plagued so many of the post-1936 discussions about Keynes's theories, especially those debates of literary economics.?-American Economic Review

Great Introduction to the Economics of Keynes

This is a great book on Keynes, and the title is appropriate --- It is a book about Keynes' 1936 book The General Theory, and not about Keynesian (Hicks-Hansen) economics.

It is written in clear and engaging prose, and is remarkably novel considering its date of publication (1948). Dillard also anticipated the American Post Keynesian rendition of the Z-D model by several years. The outline of the book is really great. It covers the whole of Keynes' General Theory book. Dillard recognizes the importance of uncertainty in economic instability, and correctly attributes this state to the investment side of income and employment activity (and not the consumption side).

This is probably the first American Post Keynesian book to be written, and it is a shame mose Post Keynesian authors have ignored it. Several reasons can explain this. Dillard does not follow Davidson in attributing unemployment to liquidity preference and the essential properties of money(approximately zero elasticities of substitution and production), although he does mention them. But Dillard is on the right track by locating the soruce of instability in the rapid movements of the marginal efficiency of capital due to the insecure foundations of investor expectations. Also, Dillard accepted without question the argument that the money supply can be directly controlled, and used this to explain the interest rate (consisting of the strength of liquidity preference and the money supply). But Dillard is on the right track in attributing greater importance to liquidity preference rathern than money supply. My favorite part of the book was Dillard's discussion of Expectations (pp. 142-153).

Every person interested in what Keynes did in his General Theory book should read this book very carefully. Read chapters 1-3 twice, and then look at chapters 5, 7, 8 and 9 to see what Keynes accomplished in his revolution.

Essential companion to the General Theory...

There have been a number of books released recently, following the 2008 financial crisis, on Keynesian economics, most notably The Return of the Master by Robert Skidelsky. Skidelsky's book is an excellent introduction to some general themes of Keynesian economics for those who are interested in applying Keynes's ideas to the current crisis and the current state of economic theory. But Skidelsky's book is too broad in intent to serve as a very helpful companion for those who are attempting to read the General Theory itself for the first time.

The basic framework that Keynes elaborates in the General Theory is not actually all that difficult to understand but Keynes himself is not always the clearest of writers which makes the General Theory a real challenge for those not trained in economics. It is often difficult, especially after only a single reading, to get a sense of how the logical pieces of Keynes's economic theory fit together. Dudley Dillard does an excellent job in this work of presenting the logical structure of Keynesian economics, as it is worked out in the General Theory, in a clear and highly accessible manner. This book is really essential reading for anyone struggling to make sense of the General Theory and since Dillard focuses nearly all of his attention on the General Theory itself, as opposed to Skidelsky who attempts to provide biographical details, an overview of economic developments since Keynes, as well as an overview of Keynes's ethics, social philosophy, and current relevance, Dillard's book is a much more useful guide to the General Theory than Skidelsky's book.

I am not really qualified to say whether Dillard's interpretation is correct in every respect. Ultimately this is something the reader must decide for themselves after comparing Dillard's interpretation to other interpretations as well as the writings of Keynes himself. But even if Dillard does make errors in his interpretation that does not negate the value of this book for those who are just beginning their studies of the General Theory. If that is you, you should definitely order this book. You will not regret it!

Dillard relly seems to have understood keynes.. I'd say he wrote the book with the situation that Keynes faced in kind.. The culmination of events..How must keynes have come to his conclusions in the General Theory.
