A book of expensive paper

There is an old joke about a man who meets a dollar bill and says, "You're just a piece of paper." The dollar smiles and replies, "I may be just a piece of paper, but I've never seen a trash can in my life." Paper money is both worthless and priceless, but Monumental Money is about a two further aspects: It can be beautiful and it carries engraved history on every bill.

Let me start with what this book is not. It is not a comprehensive reference book on US paper money aimed at notaphiliac numismatists. It is not a history book tracing US banking, public finance or engraving technology. It is not an economics text on the theory of exchange media with no intrinsic worth. It is an affectionate and breezy guided tour of US paper money from colonial days to the present and beyond.

There are high quality pictures of all the bills in circulation today, plus many older bills. It includes curiosities like fractional, rainbow, gold and high denomination notes (up to the $100,000 bill). You will see the only US bill with a photograph, the first non-symbolic woman on US currency (Martha Washington) and confederate notes. There are capsule facts about the people who have been pictured on bills, discussion of some of the iconography and photographs of the actual monuments pictured on the bills.

It adds up to a diverting and educational introduction to US paper money. If that's what you're looking for, I recommend this book.

Great Introductory Reference

Monumental Money stands as a fantastic introduction to the history of American paper currency. Not only does the book provide a good guide and photographic history of the changes made to the currency over the years, short histories and overviews of American monetary history throughout the years are concise and give just enough information for the reader to understand changes without becoming bogged down in policy or economics.

The highlight of the book are the color depictions of each different series of bill presented, both those removed from circulation and those still in circulation for every denomination. Brief histories of the design of the bills, including biographies of the statesmen on the fronts and buildings and abstract designs on the reverses of the bills are a welcome addition to help understand how our currency has evolved. Each denomination follows the same formula for its description which makes for an easy reference, but no new revelations about any of the figures is provide (not that they're needed in a work such as this.)

My only slight critique was the division of the text into three parts. Part One describes all the notes currently in circulation, Part Two provides a history of American paper currency from the Colonies to present, and Part Three describes all the high denomination notes ($500 through $100,000) in the same manner as Part One. Personally, I would have preferred to have Part Two's history first, and then a combination of Parts One and Three into one long list outlining the denominations from $1 through $100,000. This is a relatively minor critique, however, and doesn not come close to detracting from the value of Monumental Money as a fine introductory resource for monetary historians and collectors alike.

Excellent introductory book with good color images

A very good introductory book about U.S. paper money is the recent release by Yigal Arkin. Titled, Monumental Money: People and Places on U.S. Paper Money, it takes a non-technical look at our country's currency in use from the British Colonial Period to the present day. Unlike U.S. standard paper money books by Hessler or Friedberg, Monumental Money is not intended to be a catalog or guide in the traditional sense. There is no number system or prices given, nor is there a treatise on grading paper money. This is an ideal book for the neophyte or young collector who wants to easily learn the background of our nation's paper money.

Taking advantage of Arkin's own profession in computer graphics and printing and having written previous numismatic books for banks, Monumental Money is liberally illustrated, combining good layout design and use of colors to a maximum advantage to give the reader a visibly pleasing end product.

The book is divided in to three parts. Part 1 presents all the current notes in circulation ($1 to $100), including those designs being slowly withdrawn from circulation as newer designs replace them, including the newest 2011 $100 note. It also includes excellent color images and a brief description of the people on the face, sites on the back depicted on each banknote, and even the facsimile signature of the person on the face of the note. After each denomination there is a "Did You Know?" list of several facts about the person that appears on that note.

Part 2 presents a brief review of the history of the U.S. monetary system through the many types of banknotes in use from the time of the British Colonial Period from approximately 1690 to the present day. There are 13 color-coded categories, each with one or more color illustrations, both face and back, of the notes issued during these periods: Colonial Continental Currency, 1760-1788; Interest-Bearing Notes, 1812-1907; Demand Notes, 1861-1862; Confederate Currency, 1861-1865; Fractional Currency, 1863-1876; United State Notes - Legal Tender, 1862-1994; National Currency, 1863-1938; Gold Certificates, 1865-1936; Silver Certificates, 1878-1965; Treasury Notes - Coin Notes, 1890-1899; Federal Reserve Notes, 1914-present; Federal Reserve Bank Notes; 1915-1945; and Emergency Notes, World War II.

Part 3 presents the high-denomination notes that are no longer in circulation, which most people possibly never knew existed. These denominations, although large by our standards wouldn't come even close to those used by the hyperinflation notes of some post-WWII European countries. These notes are the $500, $1,000, $5,000, $10,000, and $100,000 issues.

Excellent work for egyptology fans

It's an excellent work about the cultural and historical settings in which the Rosetta Stone was carved. It's also the only work that I know that has the translation of the three scripts that appears in the Rosetta Stone: hieroglyphs, demotic and greek.

The Thrifty Man's Gateway to Demotic Egyptian

This is one of the most inexpensive ways to acces up-to-date presentations of notably Egyptian Demotic Writing / Late Egyptian language.

This product is a life-size and very legible poster of the Rosetta Stone, a minor historical document in itself but a centerpiece of hundreds of years of top-notch scholarship, the public domain highlight of which is the German interlinear presentation, 1922's "Der demotische Text der Priesterdekrete von Kanopus und Memphis (Rosettana) mit den hieroglyphischen und griechischen Fassungen und deutscher Uebersetzung nebst demotischem Glossar", which is in German.

The booklet to the poster in this product notably contains Carol Andrews' (1988) transliteration of the Demotic of the Rosetta Stone. It also contains the transliteration of the Hieroglyphic / Middle Egyptian and maybe of the (Koine-relative) Greek. It contains an up to date prose translation for each as well, and then sundry comments.

Carol Andrews also came out with a little book with some of this in it as well.

Now, the 1922 book I mentioned contains a complete glossary in Late Egyptian alphabetic order, with Demotic and etymological Egyptian Hieroglyphic Script, which I think is a rarity in Egyptology. So this product you see here is a very cheap way to interact with the Egyptian Demotic, impress your friends, and prepare for your next expedition to Egypt or the Cliff Dwellings of Arizona, same idea.

Budge put out a book in English which is now in the public domain and free online on the Rosetta Stone, which gave an interlinear for the Hieroglyphic and his age's best attempt at transliterating and translating the Demotic and the rest. This interlinear is helpful in figuring out which word is which in the Demotic. Maybe.

As far as a cheap way of accessing the Demotic script, there is Maria Betro's Egyptian Hieroglyphs book, but there's also free old works online the titles of which I forget. Find the free online Demotic primer linked to from the Wikipedia page and you'll have all the basics necessary (if you carefully study that book). And I have a blog and Facebook group on Egyptian languages, but why mention more than the name of the group "Free Lessons in Egyptian Hieroglyphic".

Demotic is just really cursive Egyptian. It's really weird. If you've studied cursive Chinese, you'll be able to relate. It's much easier than cursive Chinese, though, because of the alphabet, which is layed out in the free primer I mentioned. The alphabet is used in almost every single word, despite having up to three variants for each letter based on positioning. Demotic is really something you do after working on hieroglyphic for a while, as it's hard to understand the squiggles without thinking of what they're cursive of.

Anyway, there's tons of letters and other riveting documents in Demotic. Get the Mammoth Eyewitness Book of Ancient Egypt and see. You really haven't experienced the ancient Egyptian languages until you've done extensive work with original Demotic texts of some lasting interest. Finally, this product is something you can actually buy and hold in your hands. Because most of the affordable Demotic texts are in the public domain or free on academia.edu and will probably always be trapped inside your comptuer, so to speak.

The Rosetta Stone is also one of the world's great polyglot ancient texts. The Behistun Inscription is much cooler for content and "linguistic and writing system diversity", though, unless you just like how Egyptian Hieroglyphic really looks like pictures of things, which it really and uniquely does.

Good Vibe Here

HHC (His Holiness's Cat) may be fluffy, but her book is not. She has some things to convey to certain persons, and found just the right medium in David Michie to do this. Clearly he writes cat very well. Really, I don't know exactly what I was expecting when I came across this book, but I do like good books about animals, though I rarely get to read one by an animal, so I had to check this out. Would I recommend this? Certainly I would, there is indeed a good vibration about this book as Rinpoche (another of her several names) carries on in the Dalai Lama's absence finding out the truth about true and lasting happiness. Some of the lessons are experienced by Rinpoche herself, and had me laughing out loud, and rereading passages, others she garners while shamelessly eavesdropping on her closest humans around the area where the Dalai Lama's residence is. In the end, does she learn the truth about what really makes us purr? I think she does, though that involves a humbling realization,she is an even better cat for it which I think the Dalai Lama always knew she had it in her to be. So, thank you dear little Rinpoche, you inspire all who read your book to consider that they may be more than they ever thought as well!

Narrated with warmth and wisdom, this book captures hearts and minds

The Dalai Lama’s cat is back! David Michie first introduced the fictional feline, HHC (His Holiness’ Cat), dubbed “Little Snow Lion” by the Dalai Lama himself, in his 2012 novel "The Dalai Lama’s Cat." HHC was rescued by the Dalai Lama when he saw the small kitten being thrown in the gutter. In the first book, the reader gets an insider’s look at the day to day life of the Dalai Lama’s world as seen by his cat.

In this sequel, the Dalai Lama gives his feline companion the task of discovering the true case of happiness.

Narrated with warmth, wit and wisdom, this book captured my heart and my mind. Like the first book, this is a wonderful introduction to Buddhist principles in an easily accessible way. Readers who are already familiar with Buddhist teachings will find themselves smiling at how the tenets are presented from a cat’s point of view. The narration is sweet, poignant and at times, funny. The lessons presented in the book are profound, but the manner in which they are conveyed is subtle and entertaining, which, I believe, actually integrates them on a deeper level than merely reading about them would suggest.

The only thing I missed in this book is a stronger presence of the Dalai Lama. In the first book, David Michie’s portrayal of the Dalai Lama adds a dimension of ordinary “humanity” to this global icon. Through Mousie-Tung’s eyes, the reader gets to see this kind, compassionate and brilliant man go about his every day business. In the second book, the focus is more on some of the many colorful residents of McLeod Ganj, whose stories and transformations as they travel the path to happiness are fascinating in their own right. And perhaps there is a lesson in the Dalai Lama’s reduced appearance in this book: happiness doesn’t just come from being in the presence of enlightened leaders, we have to find it within ourselves.

Don’t miss out on this wonderful book, and if you haven’t read the first book, treat yourself to both. While this book can be read on its own, you’ll enjoy the story that much more if you read both books.

Love It! It Makes Me Purr

This author has done it again! Another book full of warmth and gentle wisdom that may be enjoyed by almost any age person. These have become my "go to" books when the world is too much with me. I need not worry about tears having to flow and I can take some very peaceful "mindful" moments as I read. Preferably taken with a mug of tea. This is not to say that the plot can't be a bit exciting and there's an abundance of situations to meditate upon, especially for those whose noses are glued to handheld electronics. Now...when may we look for the next book? Books?

James K. Peckol is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington - Seattle, where he has twice been named Teacher of the Year. He is also the founder of Oxford Consulting, Ltd., a product design and development consulting firm.

A book every embedded systems engineer should own

I have used this text as reference to design and implement numerous embedded systems - from a simple numbers game to a wireless glove guitar.

The materials presented in this book walks you through the entire hardware/software thought process that is applicable to any engineering design. The book stresses the importance of developing a modular high-level design before any implementation - and to consider things such as use cases,extreme cases, scalability, performance, and safety. The book also goes over the importance of documentation - how to properly read and write design specifications/requirements, block diagrams, timing diagrams, etc.

In addition, the book covers the nitty-gritty details of digital implementation - from basic boolean algebra to complex kernel programming. The book also covers debugging/testing processes and common mistakes to avoid in embedded system development - backed with real-life examples. Finally, sample projects included in the book allow the reader to see and implement projects on their own.

The writing style makes the text an easy-read and the numerous diagrams and examples solidifies the concepts presented.

I highly recommend this book to any embedded systems engineer.

An excellent read for anyone interested in embedded systems!

I used portions of this text during several embedded systems courses with Dr Peckol and it truly is an excellent resource and tool for an embedded engineer. It is a current, detailed, yet easily understandable look into all the aspects involved with embedded systems. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in this field or actively studying or working with embedded systems as you will no doubt benefit from Dr Peckol's insight.

As a former student of Professor James Peckol and having read portions of this book in my spare time, I can assure any prospective students looking for a secondary reference that this is book to get!

This book provides the design processes and methodologies used in the real world (I am now in industry so I can attest to this) with some great examples. If you can take his class this is the next best thing...
