Interesting cookbook!

This cookbook is quite interesting as it provides a brief description of most of the countries in a paragraph or two, then continues to list a recipe that is representative of each country's cuisine.

I really liked the book and found quite a few good recipes, however, a minor complaint is that the author provided amounts of each ingredient needed in sometimes metric/sometimes standard (aka english), often in the same recipe. This can be confusing to some people. An easy way to deal with it though is to do a quick search for a conversion table online and you're all set to try the recipe.

This is a great book

The chapters are clear, easy to read and understand, have great examples and every word is relevant to the subject. It isn't a book that contains "fluff" just for the purpose of having a bigger book, with inadequate content, so it can sell for more money. I have the great misfortune of having to read one of those "for profit and not education" books full of fluff in another course which unnecessarily repeats pedantic information and could easily be condensed into 10% of what it is. This is actually interesting to read and the seller got my book to me well before expected. Very happy with my purchase and will likely keep this book instead of reselling it.

About the Author
Ronald Munson is Professor of Philosophy of Science and Medicine at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He received his PhD from Columbia University and was Postdoctoral Fellow in Biology at Harvard University. He has been a visiting professor at University of California, San Diego, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and Harvard Medical School. A nationally acclaimed bioethicist, Munson is a medical ethicist for the National Eye Institute and a consultant for the National Cancer Institute. He is also a member of the Washington University School of Medicine Human Studies Committee. In addition to being the author of a number of science and ethics books, he is also the author of the novels NOTHING HUMAN, FAN MAIL, and NIGHT VISION.

Andrew Black has been teaching in the Philosophy Department since fall 1999. Before coming to UMSL, he taught for eight years at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and for one year at Dartmouth College. He holds the Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Dr. Black specializes in the history of philosophy, particularly the philosophy of the seventeenth century. He has published articles on Descartes, Malebranche, and Leibniz. Other areas of Dr. Black's expertise include analytic philosophy, logic, and the philosophy of science.

How every logic book should be: concise and brief

For a Logic class, this was assigned to me and I was surprised at how thin this book was. Usually, I would envision a gigantic textbook for such a dense topic.

However, this book was very concise and brief, and generally, I was able to grasp the concepts. Learning should be concise, especially like we all use to in grammar school.

Insightful, brief, and easy to understand.

Overall, buy, read, and learn this book with confidence!

Interesting even if you're not taking a Philosophy class!

This book really makes you think about what you believe and what reality really is. It challenges your way of thinking on so many levels. It helps you learn to argue a point or realize a point you believed can't be true or that you don't have the evidence to determine it to be true or false. Interesting read. Answers to odd #ed exercises in the back are helpful in determining if you have mastered the concepts or not.

About the Author

Karen Hawkins was raised in Tennessee, a member of a huge extended family that included her brother and sister, an adopted sister, numerous foster siblings, and various exchange students. In order to escape the chaos (and while hiding when it was her turn to do the dishes), she would huddle under the comforter on her bed with a flashlight and a book, a habit she still embraces to this day.

Sexy, funny and stimulating

This is another book in the series begun with "The Abduction of Julia". It centers now around the St. John `talisman ring' which rumor has it that whichever St. John is in possession of the ring will find their one true love. With this novel the ring rests in the pocket of renowned scoundrel Brandon St. John who must decide if it is a blessing ... or a curse as he has yet to find a woman that holds his interest for more than two weeks!
Drawing the short straw, so to speak at the latest St. John family gathering Brandon has been assigned the task to `buy off' an undesirable demimonde from the attentions of their younger brother Chase. These St. John men, all handsome to a fault and wealthy to boot have had much experience in thwarting the attentions of marriage minded mamas and their daughters so Brandon, the handsomest of the lot, thinks that this shouldn't take him more than a few minutes time. Expecting a hard, painted, money-hungry grasping widow, the Lady Verena Westforth was definitely out of the ordinary. Lady Verena - blond lovely and indeed enticing - she would put the arrogant, pompous Brandon St. John in his place!
Along with the lovely and comical battle of the sexes, there is a mystery and a murder to solve in which Verena is smack dab in the middle. Verena has grown to enjoy her independence until this wonderfully handsome man has aroused feelings she thought long dead. Her family background and secrets could destroy her should the investigations uncover her past - but more than that she could very well lose her heart.
This was a really good story with the added excitement and mystery of a murder and hunt for a missing list. The characters are extremely well developed, intelligent, and interesting. The introduction of Verena's butler in training - Herbert - the reformed(?) pickpocket provides numerous light hearted moments and the love scenes as Brandon, that handsome devil - shows us his stuff - well he is HOT! Excellent read which I can highly recommend.

3 1/2 stars - Who's the scoundrel here - Verena?

At the close of An Affair to Remember an unhappy Brandon St John discovers the dreaded Talisman ring in his piece of wedding cake nearly breaking a tooth! The holder of the ring is destined to meet his true love, but Brandon doesn't believe in such legends. All the same, he'll palm it off on one of his brothers if the opportunity presents itself! It seems like bad luck is all the ring has brought him when his brothers give him the unpleasant task of buying off Chase's latest paramour, worried the gold-digger will trap Chase into marriage. Family head Marcus warns Brandon that "Lady Westforth is not a milquetoast female . . . I advise you to approach her carefully". Truer words were never spoken!
Widowed Lady Verena Westforth has been relegated to the very fringe of society by her vengeful father-in-law. He never approved of her - her parents are charlatans for heaven's sake! - believes her responsible for his son's death and has done his best to ruin her reputation in polite society. And so, she exists in the demimonde supporting herself by some low-key card sharping in gaming hells. But she's no man's mistress and, unbeknownst to Brandon, has already let Chase down easy and sent him on his way. But that does not stop her from having a little fun at the overbearing Brandon's expense. Soon all of society is giggling behind his back - intolerable! And when Verena's brother is blackmailed, Brandon's friend's freedom is threatened and the solution to both is finding a list of British agents abroad, are Verena and Brandon adversaries or allies? One thing is certainly clear - they are extremely attracted to one another!
So why only 3 1/2 stars? SEMI-SPOILERS! Well, first, why would Brandon stick his neck out for a school chum who sounded more like an acquaintance? And while there's plenty of lust and even camaraderie between Brandon and Verena, I didn't feel like they were in love. No love is declared until the last chapter when he is suddenly, out of the blue, planning a wedding! And lastly, the whole blackmail scheme seemed ridiculously convoluted to me. I guess I'm being picky, but I gave An Affair to Remember 4 stars and, though I enjoyed this book, it's not as good as that one in my opinion and I just could not rate them the same. Still, all in all, an enjoyable read.

Karen Hawkins Just Gets Better and Better

I've been "glomming" Karen Hawkins since The Abduction of Julia and my expectations for this author have been surpassed quite wonderfully!
If you are in the mood for a book that will make you laugh out loud and impress you with details, this is the book for you!
I was continually surprised by the "little things" such as:
The morning meeting between the St. John brothers ("Perhaps we should call for a nice cool pitcher of water... that should get this slugabed on his feet.") - Who hasn't been threatened with cold water in order to wake up!
Herberts ("Oiye trys to keep up wif me hobbies!") Talk about laugh out loud funny!
Poole's concern for his employer (the "vile stuff" to help a hangover and the "punch drink" for a sore throat)
Verena's payback for Brandon's assuptions (the necklet was an added bonus)
The love scene in the sitting room struck a cord. It wasn't adding an "unnecessary" love scene (as so many authors are guilty of) but showed the couple's love. The entire scene was romantic without being sappy.
If I continue I will end up spoiling the fun so let me end this by saying I look forward to all future books by this amazing author, especially Chase's story :)

Vespasian's adventures

This is volume 6 of Vespasian’s fictionalised adventures. As the author mentions in his historical note, we know virtually nothing about Vespasian for about a decade following his return from Britannia. Rather than assume that he retired to his estates at the end of his two-month period as a consul, Fabbri has chosen to keep him deeply involved and at the centre of the political machinations and struggles for the succession of Emperor Claudius. The other obvious advantage and merit of such a choice is to allow the author to describe and portray Rome’s often tense relations with the Parthian Empire and its rivalry and competition over who would control the strategic highlands of Armenia.

This choice is, of course, part of an author license when writing a piece of historical fiction. It makes for a more interesting story and it is also something that Fabbri has done in some of his previous volumes dealing with Vespasian’s earlier years, and done quite successfully. Making this choice does however also mean running a bit of a risk by making the hero a bit too central or having him go through adventures and ordeals which he survives rather miraculously. The main example here is the hero’s “enforced stay” as a hostage of a satellite King who is vassal to the Parthian monarch and his somewhat implausible escape and return to Rome. Also a bit hard to believe, although just about possible, is the somewhat Machiavellian plot to provoke a Parthian-Roman war, although I will not mention anything more with regards to this in order to avoid spoilers.

The pieces I happened to prefer where those related to the power struggle surrounding Claudius’ last years. Here again, the author has make a number of choices, one of which being to depict the ageing Emperor as completely inadequate, and a drunkard in addition. Whether he really was so incapable is debatable but, again, this is the author’s choice. It is a rather plausible one given the grievous political mistakes that he made, mistakes that the author clearly show as being tantamount to suicide.

Another key feature and quality of this book is the depiction of characters and the description of the behaviours adopted by some of the historical protagonists. Two in particular – the overambitious and power hungry Agrippina (grand-daughter of Germanicus) and the cruel and unpleasant comedian Nero, her “darling” and rather unbalanced son, are particularly lurid. Nero’s reign started auspiciously and the new and young Princeps was rather popular to begin with. There was little, if anything, allowing anyone to predict how and to what extent it would degenerate and Vespasian would have been very unlikely to be in any position to “predict” this, although the outcome of the succession and Britannicus’ (the legitimate heir to Claudius and his son) rather limited future under the new regime was probably more obvious and are very vividly described.

There are also a few little glitches, such as the assignment of five cohorts of auxiliary infantry, all of which being eight hundred strong. This number does not correspond to a cohort’s size, not even a double sized one (the theoretical number would be more likely to be 960). Also, there were relatively few double sized auxiliary cohorts across the Empire and I have never heard of five of them being bunched together within the same province.

Having mentioned all this, you could start believed that I had mixed views about this book. This would be far from the truth because it is a rather superb and exciting read. For me, it turned out to be one of these books which I was simply unable to put down once I got started. Four strong stars.

and enjoyed the first three tremendously

I have read all the books in this series, and enjoyed the first three tremendously. I felt the fourth book, although readable had been written to meet a deadline, and the fifth book in the series I did not enjoy too much. It was really 2 different stories, with the Druids as the common thread.
In this new book, however, Mr. fabbri is back to his very best. A cracking read which I really enjoyed. I now look forward to more books in this series and to Vespasian's continued rise through the social strata of Rome. Students of a Rome will know how far he actually got, so roll on the ultimate promotion!

Worst Book In Series - No Historical Basis for The Story Line Presented.

I was annoyed that I had to answer some set questions before I could write my own opinion. Let me say first of this review if based on an Audio edition of the book. Peter Kenny does his usual superb job with the narration and creating the voices for the various characters. I certainly give the narration and A. The book was available on Audible UK and I got it when I was in the UK on a trip.

My complaint with this book - the worse of the series, is that the author had to make up most of it and it reads like a cheap Hollywood Script.

The period covered in this book are a period in which the historian Suetonius, states that Vespasian retired to his estates outside of town to avoid the wrath of Agrippina. Instead of sticking to the facts, Fabbri decided to concoct some fictitious nonsense about Vespasian being help captive by the Parthians for 2 years and miraculously escapes with the help of Magnus and his Slave Hormus. It just really was not even remotely plausible if anyone knows anything about the relations between Rome and Parthia.

This book turned a great series into a Grade D Hollywood script. The first part which takes place in Rome was OK, but it went downhill so fast into a cheap Hollywood sword and sandals script. I am sure if the author wanted to be viewed as a credible writer, he should have stuck to the facts. Vespasian was in retirement and he could have told the story of events in Rome and the death of Claudius instead of making up a bunch of tripe about Vespasian being captured by the Parthians.

This book is simply NOT worth reading. The early books in the series are good, but this book demonstrated that Fabbri does not know how to deal with the history of the period. I wonder what sort of mess he will create when he gets to the year of the 4 Emperors.

The book lacks wiring diagrams and comprehensive details on electrical matters. I have used many Chilton books since the 1970's. This book is too general in that Chilton tried to cover all models of most imported makes built in four years. I wasted my money on this one; it'll go to our community library. I have reviewed and will order the Chrysler manual for $82.00 as it will provide full information.
