About the Author
ALEXANDER WEINSTEIN is the director of the Martha’s Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing. He is the recipient of a Sustainable Arts Foundation Award, and his stories have received the Lamar York, Gail Crump, and New Millennium Prizes, have been nominated for Pushcart Prizes, and appear in the anthology New Stories from the Midwest. He is an associate professor of creative writing at Siena Heights University and leads fiction workshops in the United States and Europe.

A literary Black Mirror

Children of the New World by Alexander Weinstein is a mind-bending short story collection that uses science fiction to illustrate what tomorrow might look like. Akin to a literary Black Mirror, each story powerfully illustrates how technology impacts our lives and forces us to confront what it means to be human. In dissecting the future, Weinstein reveals hidden truths about the present.

Black Mirror in Short Stories, but very bleak

This book has been frequently compared to the BBC series Black Mirror, and the comparison is valid. These stories look at the dark side of our increasing reliance on technology, and how that may expand int he years to come.
I love the first few stories, but over time, the darkness grew and I found myself searching for any nuggets of positivity. Surely our futures won't be completely bleak?
At said, it's definitely worth reading. But you may want to mix these stories in with something a bit lighter.

Parents beware, and read it anyway

This book is a thinker. You'll find your thoughts returning to one or more of its stories again and again, like when you read "Animal Farm" in high school.

I wish there weren't such adult-themed references sprinkled in. I see the need, but would have loved to read all the stories out loud to my teenage kids like I did the first one.

Wish there was something less than one star to rate this boo

Theres this old line - If a man wrote a book on how to lose and it did very bad, could it be called it a success?
And today after reading Sin To Win, Ive come to ask myself just that.
What made me buy the book was its gleamy evil look. I love books on corporate power and powerful relationships. A book I loved is Robert Greene's 48 LAws of power.
The next book i bought - Sin to win has been a complete disaster.
I havent read any other of the authors and pray i never do so.
The book has a feel of being written while under the influence of alcohol. Ofcourse the deadly sins are good but it didnt have to be proved practically on the content.
Some sections inspire. Like Anger and how it can be used productively.
But the rest makes me feel like eating my leg while piercing my ears with red hot needles [phrase taken from the book];)
Two most annoying features of the book are, one, the author talks of incidents and stories which are mostly unrelated to the context and worse at times contradictory to the point he is making
And two, the language.
I wouldnt want to be taught or even be spoken to by a person who loves using words like _... substitution_ and _nice, slow ... job_ in his text as if he was describing the engineering of a Jag Engine which he claims is made by Ford.
I would strongly recommend against this book unless the reader desperately needs to find a preson who is worse than the worst he knows

First book in a Trilogy: Focused on McClellan, stops with Battle of Antietam

It’s common knowledge that the North had a huge advantage in both material and manpower -- and that, early on, the North’s lack of effective military leadership negated those advantages. “Mr Lincoln’s Army” details the North’s leadership issues and also explains how they resulted in prolonging the war (and the suffering) for years – and yet also how they ultimately set the stage for complete abolition throughout all of the United States.

The Battle of Antietam (which the author deemed a psychological turning point in the war for both the Northerners and Southerners) is very well covered. But with the battle’s many participants and wide scope (and without the book having any maps or list-of-commanders), it’s not simple for the reader to follow the overall flow of that battle. Of course, for the soldiers fighting in that battle, the same was true.

Well written. Sometimes depressing (due to all the carnage). Was left with a feeling of incompleteness (as only the first-of-a-trilogy).

A great, touching book

I am close to finishing this paperback. All I can say is that Catton's writing is absolutely poetic. I have read many books about war and about our Civil War. I think no other author (except maybe Karl Marlantes) has put words to paper that provide vivid pictures of what men experience in combat and in those unforgiving lulls fraught with fear, guilt and regret prior to the next engagement. Whenever I think our times are screwed up, reading about the Civil War grounds me. No other book does it better than this one. Catton captures it all in words that are beautiful to read. I can't believe it took me so long to come to him.

Bruce Catton is the gold standard of American civil war historians

I first read this book, and the subsequent two books in Bruce Catton's American Civil War trilogy (which begins with Mr. Lincoln's Army), in high school at the suggestion of my all-time favorite teacher, the late Mr. Alvin Murphy, who taught American history at our school. Now, 55 years later, I have just finished rereading the trilogy - and these three books are just as great as I remember them to be! Bruce Catton is the gold standard of American civil war historians.
