Carolands is among the grandest American residences. Designed by celebrated French architect Ernest Sanson for Harriett Pullman Carolan, heiress to the Pullman railroad car fortune, the 65,000 square feet, 98-room mansion was built between 1912 and 1916 on a 500-acre estate at the highest point of the exclusive township of Hillsborough, California. The plans for the gardens and surrounding park were drawn up by the great landscape designer Achille Duch??ne Architectural historian Michael Middleton Dwyer discussed Carolands' place among the great houses of its day - such as Harbor Hill, Lynnewood, Biltmore, and Vizcaya - and then explores the history of how Sanson, Duchene, and Polk came to be commissioned to build this magnificent house for the heiress. A magnificent color portfolio shows the house and garden today, which have been meticulously restored by Carolands current owners. Martin Lane Fox, until recently Vice Chairman of the Royal Horticultural Society and Chairman of its Horticultural Board, was asked to re-create the gardens, and the legendary Mario Buatta undertook the interior decoration. An outstanding feature of the book is the reproduction of original drawings and plans by Sanson, Duchene, and Polk, all specially photographed for the book, as well as original letters among the three on the design and construction of Carolands and archival photographs of the interiors and furnishings. Superbly designed and produced, this book is an exemplary record of a great house.

A beautiful book, for a beautiful American treasure!

Having grown up on the Peninsula, the Carolands Mansion was always a place I would take people from out of town. The first time I saw it I was stunned, and from that moment on, a love affair began! Having seen the property at its worst and decaying state, to a beautiful lady dressed for a cotillion, this book captures the essence, and grandeur of a magnifcent time in the guilded age of American history. The new owners have lovingly restored the mansion to it's original glory, and all of us who have a heart for this treasure, WE THANK YOU! For long time people interested in the Carolands, and those who appreciate America's past, this book is a MUST HAVE! Gorgeous photos, fascinating reading, and lovingly put together! Don't pass this up!

GILDED AGE BEAUTY ON THE PENNINSULA

This book is as spectacular as the amazing Gilded Age chateaux it showcases. Carolands is nothing short of breathtaking, and this book shows the mansion at its most radiant. Unlike many of its contemporaries, like the long gone Harbor Hill of the Long Island Gold Coast, or the dulapidated Lynnwood on Philadelphia's Main Line, Carolands has been painstakingly restored and sits majestically on its hilltop perch, as radiant as the day it was built. I highly recommend this book, for its vivid images and insightful text, the authors should be commended for this gorgeous work...another beautiful book from Acanthus Press.

Setting the standard!

It is not often that a single home can sustain an entire book... and when books have been done on a single residence they often have left much unsaid and unshown. This is not so with "Carolands" for it is all there... and in wonderful color... colorful photographs and colorful words. What makes this fine work stand apart form most of its kind is the spectacular use of original plans many in fold out form. It is hard to imagine that this book will not become a favorite of both the architectural buff as well the working architects who will have much to digest and savor. While a wonderful coffee table book... I suspect that over the years it well may become a bit dog-eared from repeated viewings and readings. Even if you only half love classical architecture... this is a "must have" addition to your library.
