About the Author
Widely considered one of the greatest postwar poets in Norway, Tor Ulven (born 1953) was also one of its greatest innovators in prose, influencing countless other fiction writers, not least Jon Fosse and Stig S terbakken. Ulven committed suicide in 1995.

Kjersti A. Skomsvold was born in 1979 in Oslo. "The Faster I Walk, the Smaller I Am" is her first novel.

Stig Saeterbakken (1966 2012) was one of Norway s most acclaimed contemporary writers. His novels include Through the Night and Siamese (also published by Dalkey Archive).

Beautiful in mostly all its spaces. Great choice!

"Replacement," let me say, is a beautiful book. The flap describes it as a prose symphony. I agree. It's composed of ultra detailed fragments, kind of like if you were looking through crisp snapshots of a person's life. And maybe we are looking at just one man's life experiences, his mental snapshots--or maybe we are looking at several people's experiences, the thing is we don't know and it doesn't matter. This blending between known/unknown fits well with the style of the book which has 16 or 17 different points of view that bleed together seamlessly in chronological order. What's so much fun here is that there is no warning when it's going to shift, the only thing you know is that a viewpoint lasts a couple of pages and then, suddenly when it's "meditating" on an object, say the pattern on curtains for example, the entire scene moves. Picture a lens focusing, blurring, and then re-adjusting and everything has changed. The whole symphony part from the jacket flap comes into play because certain characteristics of objects in one scene are echoed in another, think somewhere between a musical refrain and a variation, and there are several of these throughout.

No chapters, just paragraphs all roughly the same length.

In my opinion, the book could should have been cut about 20-25 pages short (ideally ending at the conclusion of the paragraph at the top pg. 121). A fair amount of the last 1/4 of the book really falls short of the rest, becoming overly confusing and belly-dragging. Still, 5 stars due to the quality of the prose and the minute observations of the author, Tor Ulven. They are so fresh you can return again and again to this book and not tire of it. It's literary art.

About the Author

Dawn L. Rothe is an Associate Professor of Criminology at Old Dominion University. She is the author or co-author of six books, over six dozen peer-reviewed articles and book chapters dealing with related topics to crimes of globalization including state-corporate crime, state crime, and the international criminal justice system. Her articles appear in such journals as International Criminal Review, Contemporary Justice, Criminology and Public Policy, Justice Quarterly, Crime, Law and Social Change, and Social Justice as well as in various books. She has been a visiting professor and/or guest lecturer at a number of Universities in Croatia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Belgium. In 2008, she received the Critical Criminologists of the Year Award of the Division on Critical Criminology of the American Society of Criminology and in 2010 she was the recipient of the White-Collar Crime Research Consortium Young Scholar of the Year award.

David O. Friedrichs is Distinguished Professor of Sociology/Criminal Justice at the University of Scranton. He has published several books as well over 130 book chapters, articles, encyclopaedia entries, proceedings papers, and essays on topics such as the legitimation of legal order, radical criminology, victimology, violence, narrative jurisprudence, postmodernism, and white collar crime. His articles have been published in such journals as Criminology, Justice Quarterly, Crime & Delinquency, Criminal Justice Review, Criminology & Public Policy, Social Research, Social Problems, Qualitative Sociology, Journal of Legal Education, and Teaching Sociology.. He has been a visiting professor or guest lecturer at a number of colleges and Universities, in Europe, South Africa, Israel and Australia, as well as in the United States. In 2005 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Division on Critical Criminology of the American Society of Criminology. He served as President of the White Collar Crime Research Consortium.

In this compelling analysis of 20th-century art and architecture, presented from the perspective of Taylor's deconstructionist theology (as seen in his Erring: A Postmodern A/theology , Univ. of Chicago, 1987), the development of the art and architecture of the modern period is discussed in terms of a series of "disfigurings." For example, the abstract art of Kandinsky, Mondrian, and Reinhardt is seen as part of a strategy to express the Absolute through the removal of this-worldly representational (i.e., figurative) elements. Taylor is excellent in his detailed analysis of the philosophical and religious motives that contributed to the creation of the works studied. He uses the terms religious and spiritual in the abstract sense of the German Idealists, whose "theoesthetics," detailed in the first chapter, forms the philosophical backdrop for the subsequent chapters. This book covers much the same territory as Doug Adams's Transcendence with Human Body in Art ( LJ 10/1/91), though in much greater depth and clarity of analysis. Highly recommended for art, architecture, and religion collections.

If you are reading Disfiguring to get a survey of art in the 20th century, you are, for a lack of a better word, misreading Taylor's meditation on the connections between art,architecture and religion. Taylor discusses the development of European artistic modernism and its relation to philosophical and theosophical issues to reveal their interlacing connection with one another. Modernism stems, Taylor argues, from German Idealism and its attempt to totalize the world in a promise of a better life. This, combined with theosophy--a mystical, universalizing type of religion--are from the outset at the heart of modernism and modern art. He consequently expands on this position and follows its development up to the present period. Taylor appears to view the creation of art and architecture as being fundamentally religious acts. If this is the case, what does modernism say about who we are in the West? Taylor claims commodification and an obssessive fascination with the rational seem to be a part of what modern art says the West worships. As a "post-modernist" thinker, Taylor examines how we can live religiously without the totalizing claims of modernism, the violence that often comes with a society bent on rationalizing the world, and the deepening relationship between money and identity...He lays out a few suggestions and dicusses how some artists and architects are struggling with the fractured--the torn--condition of the West. A rupturing of the state of affairs in a modernist culture, he appears to say, is not a bad thing--it's maybe even necessary in order for us to understand "spirit" apart from some of the objectives of modernism. This is a remarkable book.

Gathering sources for upcoming school year academic competitions and found this by accident. Its one of the best I've found relevant for middle schoolers. Content is broad and well-balanced. It will be a great tool for my quiz bowl students. Also, I will use it for in-class competitions since kids love to challenge each other, so it will be fun for them while their learning.

This book has a nice variety of questions on multiple topics and the format is great for a general knowledge quiz as an interesting class room game that could inspire some intellectual curiosity. I have the kindle edition which has a question followed by an answer. I don't know about any other format.
